DeSoto Co, FL (August 3, 2021) – On Sunday, August 1, two motorcyclists sustained injuries in the aftermath of a crash in DeSoto County.

The Florida Highway Patrol revealed that the incident occurred at the intersection of FL-72 and Owens Avenue. Local reports indicated that a 73-year-old North Port man was stopped on a motorcycle on the eastbound shoulder of the highway. That morning at around 11 a.m, the rider attempted to merge back onto the road.

It was then that the man collided with another motorcycle operated by an 83-year-old man from Punta Gorda. The crash caused the second rider to crash into the side of a nearby SUV. Both motorcyclists sustained serious injuries and were transported to a local hospital for treatment. No one in the SUV was injured in the impact.

An ongoing investigation into the motorcycle crash is being managed by local authorities.

Our thoughts are with the injured victims and their families at this time. We hope for their full recovery.

Motorcyclists have limited protection when colliding with a car, even if they follow all safety procedures, which means that the injuries that follow are almost always more serious. Even the most frequent road hazards, including potholes, ice, cracks, and slick roadways, offer a far greater risk to riders than to cars, putting motorcyclists at a higher risk of catastrophic injury.
