Dunedin, FL (September 24, 2021) – On Wednesday, September 22, a sheriff’s deputy was injured after being struck by a motorist in Dunedin.
The accident occurred late that evening at around 11:45 p.m. A deputy with the Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office DUI Unit was in the process of conducting a traffic stop at the crossing of Skinner Boulevard and Highland Avenue at the time of the crash. While the officer was speaking with the driver, a vehicle was speeding eastbound toward her on Skinner Boulevard.
The officer attempted to get out of the way but was hit by the driver’s side mirror of the oncoming car. The driver fled the scene but was later found and identified as 32-year-old Jonathan Chinchilla. Chinchilla was arrested and taken into custody. Authorities believe that alcohol was involved in the incident.
An ongoing investigation into the crash is underway.
Our thoughts are with the injured victim and her family at this time. We hope for a full recovery.
Pedestrian Crashes in Florida
There isn’t much that can be done to protect humans from the full impact of a crash. As a result, pedestrians are more likely to sustain serious injuries. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, pedestrians are 1.5 times more likely than passenger car occupants to be killed in a vehicle collision.
Pedestrians are killed or injured in car accidents at a higher rate every year, despite overall mortality rates decreasing. In the United States, a pedestrian was killed every 88 minutes on average in 2017. In Florida, pedestrians are particularly susceptible. The state has a bad reputation as a dangerous location to visit.
Even if you believe your claim is impregnable, you should consult a Dunedin pedestrian injury attorney to ensure that your right to compensation is protected in the event of an accident. Many pedestrian accident victims are bewildered as to why they need a personal injury lawyer after a crosswalk collision. Even the most straightforward injury claims, however, can provide unexpected hurdles to those with little legal experience. It’s likely that you’ve never filed a personal injury claim before. You should seek the advice of a knowledgeable Florida personal injury attorney.
You may be able to recover the money you need to get back on your feet if the driver is to blame for your injuries after a pedestrian collision. The first step in your recovery is to hire an attorney who has handled pedestrian accident cases before.
