Early morning DUI crash kills Bradenton woman

A deadly DUI Crash took the life of an 80-year-old Bradenton woman in Palmetto, Manatee County at about 3:30 AM on Sunday, January 1.

The Florida car crash happened when a Jeep Wrangler was traveling south on U.S. 41, approaching the intersection of Buckeye Road in Palmetto. The driver noticed a vehicle heading towards him from the south and steered the jeep into the grass in a desperate dash to avoid a collision.

But the other vehicle – a Hyundai Sonata – lost control and crashed into the right side of the Jeep, causing the rugged SUV to flip and overturn multiple times before it finally came to rest. A passenger in the rear was brutally ejected from the Jeep.

Florida Highway Patrol identified the ejected passenger as an 80-year-old woman who died at the scene from her injuries. Troopers say that the victim who was killed was not wearing a seat belt.

The Jeep’s other occupants – the 56 year old driver from Sarasota and a 36 year old Bradenton woman – had seatbelts on and received minor injuries.

The Hyundai driver, a 36-year-old Tampa woman, suffered minor injuries as well. She was booked on multiple charges – DUI manslaughter, DUI property damage, driving on a suspended license, reckless driving, and causing death.

Officials said that at the time of the crash, visibility in the area was limited due to foggy conditions.

The names of those involved in the accident were not released. The Florida Highway Patrol Traffic Homicide Unit is investigating the crash.

Our deepest condolences are extended to the departed’s family during this difficult time. Our thoughts and prayers are with the injured.
