Florida Highway Patrol reports that a Briarwood accident in St. Johns County late Friday, March 24, killed a couple, both 70, of Daytona Beach Shores.
The accident occurred about 11 PM on state highway A1A when they were trying to cross the highway and got hit by a southbound SUV. Both the victims were rushed to the nearest hospital, where the doctors pronounced them dead.
The SUV driver, a 64-year-old woman from Gautier, Missouri, was not hurt and remained at the scene after the crash. Her passengers, a St. Augustine woman, 69, and a 29-year-old woman from Pickerington, Ohio, were also unharmed.
No other details are available. An investigation is underway, and a report will be released soon.
Our deepest condolences go out to the family and friends of the deceased couple.

Tragic Briarwood accident
According to a new analysis from the Governors Highway Safety Association (GHSA), 3,434 pedestrians were killed by drivers in 2022 – up 5%, or 168 more deaths, from the same period the year before. In the past decade, pedestrian deaths in the first six months rose from 2,141 in 2013 to 3,434 in 2022 – a 60% increase.
GHSA identifies four big reasons for the rising number of pedestrian accidents in Florida:
- Reckless driving is getting worse
- A growing number of people are buying larger, heavier vehicles that are more likely to injure seriously or kill people on foot in the event of a crash
- Fast-moving traffic takes priority over pedestrian-safe slower speeding
- The lack of essential infrastructure such as sidewalks, crosswalks, and lighting makes pedestrians and road crossers vulnerable
Nothing prepares you for the heart-wrenching pain of losing a loved one in a road accident. The sudden void left behind by the death of someone you love is tough to deal with, especially if they are no longer around to share precious moments with you.
