Florida car wreck kills one, injures three in Fruitland Park

A Florida car wreck ended with a death and three injuries after a two-vehicle crash on U.S. 27/441 near Miller Street in Fruitland Park at about 4:00 PM Saturday, February 25.

Florida Highway Patrol crash report describes the crash as a horrific end to a police pursuit in Lady Lake, where police pursued a local Home Depot theft suspect.

The suspect in his southbound car entered Fruitland Park on U.S. Highway 27, veered onto the center median, and kept going south in the northbound lanes at an estimated 110 mph. Inevitably, it brutally crashed into an SUV head-on. The white SUV spun out of control and ended up in the side lane.

Apparently, there was so much damage that firefighters had to use saws, the “jaws of life” hydraulic pry equipment, and other high-tech stuff to rescue the SUV’s occupants.

The fleeing suspect, identified as a 35-year-old man from Orlando, died at the scene due to the intense impact. Three occupants of the SUV were flown by helicopter to nearby hospitals. The injured victims have been identified as a seriously injured 43-year-old woman and two teenage girls, 13 and 14, who suffered minor injuries.

Overspeeding led to this Florida car wreck

The fleeing man’s black car shattered into a pile of glass and shards. It overturned and finally landed in the opposite lane.

After a lengthy shutdown, traffic was reopened just before 3 AM Sunday, however, with one lane blocked. The crash is under investigation in more detail.

Our deepest condolences go out to the deceased’s family. As our thoughts turn to the injured victims and their families, we wish them a quick and complete recovery.
