Huge 21 vehicle crash on Florida highway I-75 kills 3, injures many

A staggering 21 vehicles were involved in a massive chain reaction crash on Florida highway I-75 just after midnight on new year’s day. As a result of the unprecedented collision, 3 people were killed and many others were injured.

The dead – 2 men and a woman – were all Chicago residents. The identities of the victims were not released.

According to Florida Highway Patrol, the horrific smashup occurred near mile marker 414, in Lake City. Five emergency rescue units were dispatched to move the injured to the Lake City Medical Center or to Shands Hospital, University of Florida.

Investigations have also revealed that the actual number of those injured has not yet been established as some of them went to the hospital on their own.

It took about 12 hours for the official crash investigation unit to finish capturing all the facts and evidence of the crash and remove debris and vehicles from the highway.

An in-depth investigation by the Florida Highway Patrol is underway, and additional details about the chain reaction crash are expected to be released soon.

It is with deep sorrow that we extend our deepest condolences to the families of the deceased in this time of loss. We wish the injured victims a speedy and complete recovery.

The tragic crash on Florida highway should never have happened

Road users were warned multiple times about dense fog conditions in northern Florida by the National Weather Service in Jacksonville. In fact, it had warned of dense fog less than three hours earlier for Columbia County, the site of the multi-vehicle crash.

It is possible that most of the drivers failed to realize the threat of what could happen or simply ignored the warning because of the excitement of new year’s day.
