Lakeland, FL (July 17, 2022) – The Lakeland Police Department was notified that a motor vehicle accident occurred on Friday in Polk County that required assistance. Just before 1145 p.m., on July 15, calls for help came to the Lakeland police regarding a crash that occurred on South Florida Avenue.
Investigations show that a 46-year-old motorcyclist was driving in the area of South Florida Avenue in Polk Parkway when the driver of an SUV, 39-year-old Michael Angelo Diaz, turn left into their path. As a result, the two vehicles collided.
Diaz exited his vehicle and fled the scene on foot.
Emergency crews rushed to the scene and began performing CPR on the injured motorcyclist. The victim was transported to Lakeland Regional Health, where he passed away from his injuries.
Diaz returned to the scene of the accident approximately 30 minutes later. He was arrested by the police and transported to Polk County Jail, where he was charged with leaving the scene of a motor vehicle accident involving death.
The Polk Police Department closed off the intersection for approximately five hours as they worked to investigate. Investigations surrounding the accident are currently ongoing.
