One killed in a fatal semi-truck accident in Nocatee

A fatal car accident in Nocatee ended with the death of an 84-year-old man from St. Johns Tuesday, February 21 on the U.S. 1 expressway at N. Stratton Road.

Florida Highway Patrol troopers report that the tragedy occurred when a semi-truck, attempting to turn left, was hit by a southbound car driving directly under the semi’s trailer. The 84-year-old car driver was pronounced dead at the scene. Often, this type of accident is called a side underride crash.

The early morning traffic accident left all southbound lanes of U.S. 1 blocked for several hours. The semi-driver, a 27-year-old man from Orange Park, did not suffer any injuries.

Initial investigation indicates that both drivers were wearing seat belts at the time of the collision. Police are investigating the incident and will release more details in due course.

We extend our heartfelt condolences to the deceased’s family members during this difficult time.

Anyone who has driven alongside a tractor-trailer knows they’re different. In an accident with a truck, car occupants are significantly more likely to suffer serious injuries or death.
