Police arrest motorcyclist for a fatal DUI accident in Florida

Titusville Police on Wednesday, January 4 charged the driver of a motorcycle with killing a human and an unborn child following a Memorial Day DUI accident in Florida last year.

A motorcycle driven by Tyler Zimmerman, 27, crashed into a vehicle on South Washington Avenue near Riveredge Drive, triggering an investigation by Titusville police. Kristen Kief, the motorcycle’s passenger, could not survive the devastating collision and was pronounced dead at a nearby hospital.

According to investigators, Zimmerman appeared impaired, smelt of alcohol, and had no memory of riding alongside a passenger. As per records, his blood alcohol content exceeded the legal threshold by 1.53 times.

There was no injury reported to the driver of the vehicle the motorcycle collided with.

Our heart goes out to the Kief family in their unbearable loss.

The DUI accident in Florida was heartbreaking

Despite making up barely 3% of registered vehicles in the U.S., motorcycles are responsible for 14% of all traffic deaths. DUI or driving under the influence must be addressed as a grave social issue as it accounts for nearly 30% of Florida’s traffic deaths as excessive alcohol impairs judgment and slows reaction times.

According to Florida Statute 316.193, driving under the influence of alcohol and drugs constitutes a crime. It is punishable by up to five years in prison if it causes serious injury. In cases where it results in death, the crime is considered a second-degree felony, with up to 15 years in prison as the penalty.
