Polk Co, FL (August 5, 2021) – A teen driver crashed an SUV in Polk County on Wednesday, August 4, killing their passenger.
The deadly crash occurred at the intersection of US-98 and Old Stokes Road at around 2:30 p.m. The 17-year-old driver was reportedly traveling on the highway when they swerved to avoid a bird on the road. The vehicle left the roadway after hitting a culvert before becoming briefly airborne and crashing into the ground.
The driver was taken to AdventHealth Sebring for the treatment of sustained injuries. The 45-year-old Sebring woman riding as a passenger was transported to Lakeland Regional Health in critical condition. She was later pronounced dead.
