Pre-Christmas Crash: 2 killed in a Florida Turnpike crash
Last updated Tuesday, January 3rd, 2023
A tragic Florida Turnpike crash has claimed the lives of two people. An 11-year-old boy and a 40-year-old man from Ocala were killed in a two-vehicle crash in Sumter County early Thursday, December 22.
Florida Highway Patrol troopers report that the crash occurred shortly before 1 AM, and injured five other people, all traveling in the same vehicle as the two victims. The seven people were all members of the same family based in Ocala.
According to the official FHP press release, a sedan and an SUV were both headed north near mile marker 304 when the sedan attempted to overtake but instead smashed into the SUV. The violent impact caused both vehicles to veer onto the grass median.
While the sedan driver managed to stop, the SUV rolled over multiple times, killing two people inside. Five other SUV occupants suffered minor injuries: the 38-year-old female driver, a 14-year-old girl, a 10-year-old girl, a 37-year-old woman, and a 14-year-old boy.
The sedan’s lone occupant, a 27-year-old Inverness man, did not suffer any injuries. Press releases from the FHP no longer include victim names.
An in-depth investigation is underway, and more details will be released as they become available.
We extend our deepest condolences to the family from Ocala for their devastating loss. Our thoughts and prayers are with the injured for a speedy recovery.
