Punta Gorda, FL (November 23, 2022) – A woman has been charged in connection with a crash that resulted in the death of a state deputy in the Punta Gorda area on Wednesday morning, November 23.
The deadly accident was reported on Interstate 75 south of US-17 at around 11:32 a.m. A state trooper had reportedly pulled over the driver of a Honda on the interstate and had his emergency lights activated. It was then that a Jeep driven by 30-year-old Cassandra Smith of Lakeville, Massachusetts lost control and crashed into the parked vehicles.
The deputy suffered critical injuries and was transported to a nearby hospital where he was later pronounced dead. The driver of the Honda was also hospitalized. Smith was charged with DUI manslaughter and was taken to Charlotte County jail.
An ongoing investigation into the cause of the deadly crash is in progress.
