St Petersburg, FL (March 7, 2022) – Two people were injured following a crash involving an alleged drunk driver in St. Petersburg on Sunday morning. The accident was reported on Interstate 275 at the Skyway Bridge near the time of 8:45 a.m.
It was reported that 52-year-old Kristen Kay Watts of Sarasota was driving northbound in a 2011 BMW 335i. There was a closure on the highway due to the Armed Forces Skyway 10K Race. Instead of taking the detour onto US-41, Watts continued into the closed area and knocked over several traffic cones.
Officers attempted to stop the driver, but she continued until she crashed head-on with a 2019 Chevy Tahoe. The officer in the vehicle and Watts were both seriously injured and transported to a local hospital for treatment. Watts was cited for driving under the influence.
An ongoing investigation into the accident is underway.
Our thoughts are with the injured victims and their families at this time. We hope for their full recovery.
