Tampa, FL (September 6, 2021) – A local man was killed while assisting another motorist on a Tampa highway on Sunday, September 5.
The deadly crash occurred on Interstate 275 north of Interstate 4. According to reports from state troopers, a 79-year-old Tampa man and a 30-year-old Clearwater man stopped on the roadway to assist a 29-year-old Clearwater woman. Her van was reportedly disabled in the center lane.
The 79-year-old was on a scooter and the other man was in an SUV. While the three parties were stopped on the roadway, a 44-year-old Tampa woman crashed into them. She was unable to avoid the crash and struck the man on the scooter and the SUV. This sent them both crashing into the disabled van. The man on the scooter suffered fatal injuries and was pronounced dead.
An ongoing investigation into the deadly accident is underway.
We would like to extend our deepest condolences to the family of the deceased victim at this time.
Florida Deadly Pedestrian Crashes
In the United States, a pedestrian was killed every 88 minutes on average in 2017. In Florida, pedestrians are particularly susceptible. The state has a poor reputation for being a hazardous place to visit. This is especially true in big cities. Pedestrians are being killed or injured in car accidents at a rising rate each year, despite the fact that overall vehicle mortality rates are decreasing.
There isn’t much that can be done to keep pedestrians safe from a full-force collision. As a result, pedestrians are more vulnerable. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, pedestrians are 1.5 times more likely than passenger car passengers to be killed in a vehicle collision.
