Deadly Pedestrian Accidents in Florida
Florida has the highest rate of pedestrian accidents in the nation. Not only that, but Tampa is one of the top 10 most hazardous cities in the US for pedestrians. In America, pedestrian accidents are increasing, including hit-and-run incidents, which makes it even more difficult for accident victims to obtain the financial support they require to recuperate from their injuries.
In Florida, the regulations pertaining to pedestrians are not too complicated. Pedestrians are required to keep out of the roadway and use the sidewalks whenever they are available unless there is an obstacle of some kind that prevents pedestrians from utilizing the sidewalk in a safe manner. In areas that do not have sidewalks, pedestrians need to walk on the left shoulder of the road while facing the direction of approaching traffic.
At junctions that do not have designated crosswalks, pedestrians are expected to yield to oncoming vehicles. The same rule applies to situations in which pedestrians cross the street in the middle of the block or at an intersection that does not have a marked crosswalk. It is important to note that crossing the street in the middle of the road as a pedestrian is not always against the law; nonetheless, it is the responsibility of the pedestrian to do so in a safe manner while giving way to vehicle traffic.
