Clearwater, FL – Two Clearwater Officers Hurt in Crash on Drew St
Last updated Friday, March 28th, 2025
Clearwater, FL (March 27, 2025) – On Wednesday morning, March 26, two Clearwater police officers were injured during a traffic accident in Pinellas County. The crash occurred as the officers were responding to a call, and their police vehicle was operating with lights and sirens at the time of the collision. Both officers were transported to Morton Plant Hospital for treatment and were later released.
According to reports, the crash happened at the intersection of Drew Street and Martin Luther King Jr. Avenue. The police vehicle was headed north on Martin Luther King Jr. Ave. when a westbound vehicle on Drew St. failed to yield the right-of-way. This led to a violent impact, sending the patrol car into a concrete pole. The civilian vehicle involved struck a nearby tree. Emergency crews responded to the scene, and the area was briefly shut down as the situation was handled. Police have not confirmed whether the civilian driver suffered injuries.
We hope the two injured officers recover quickly.
Car Accidents in Florida
Traffic collisions involving law enforcement vehicles are not uncommon in Florida. According to state crash statistics, Florida consistently reports thousands of crashes each year involving emergency vehicles. In many of these cases, failure to yield to vehicles with lights and sirens activated is a leading cause of impact.
When police vehicles are involved in crashes, here are some critical concerns that arise:
- Failure to Yield Laws: Florida law requires all drivers to yield to emergency vehicles when sirens and lights are active. Despite this, many collisions happen because drivers either fail to notice or choose not to move over. This can put both officers and the public at serious risk.
- Intersection Dangers: Most emergency vehicle crashes occur at intersections, where visibility and reaction time are often compromised. High-speed crossings combined with other vehicles failing to yield can result in serious injuries or worse.
- Secondary Impact Hazards: After an initial collision, vehicles—especially large ones like police cruisers—can be redirected into fixed objects or other cars. This creates additional danger for occupants and bystanders.
- Officer Injuries: Officers injured while on duty may face long recovery times and missed work. These injuries can be both physical and emotional, particularly in high-stress scenarios.
