Hillsborough Co., FL – Man Killed in Head-On Crash on SR 674

Hillsborough County, FL (May 19, 2025) – A man from Wimauma tragically lost his life in a violent two-vehicle crash that occurred during the afternoon hours of May 16. According to the Florida Highway Patrol, the wreck took place at approximately 2:52 p.m. on State Road 674, just west of Carlton Branch Drive.

Authorities report that the 44-year-old was driving a GMC Envoy eastbound when he failed to navigate a curve in the roadway. As a result, his vehicle crossed the center line and entered the westbound lanes, directly into the path of an oncoming GMC Yukon. Behind the wheel of the Yukon was a 58-year-old woman from Plant City, accompanied by an 81-year-old passenger.

The two SUVs collided in what FHP described as a “nearly head-on” impact. The driver of the Envoy sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene. Emergency crews treated the other occupants of the Yukon for minor injuries. They did not require hospitalization. State Road 674 remained partially closed while troopers conducted their investigation and cleared the wreckage.

We extend our condolences to the family of the man who lost his life in this crash.

Understanding the impact of fatal crashes can help families and survivors manage the aftermath. Below are some important facts about wrongful death claims in Florida:

  • Who Can File a Claim: In Florida, only certain individuals can bring a wrongful death lawsuit. Typically, a personal representative files on behalf of the deceased’s estate and surviving family members, including spouses, children, and sometimes parents.
  • Damages That May Be Recovered: Compensation may include lost income, funeral costs, medical bills, and emotional pain and suffering. These damages are meant to ease the financial burden left behind after a tragic death.
  • Time Limits for Filing: There is a strict two-year statute of limitations for wrongful death claims in Florida. Missing this deadline could prevent families from receiving the compensation they deserve, so it’s important to act quickly.
  • Proving Liability: The plaintiff must show that another party’s negligence directly caused the death. This can include evidence such as accident reports, eyewitness statements, and expert testimony.
  • Role of Legal Counsel: Because wrongful death cases often involve complex legal and financial matters, having a knowledgeable attorney can help surviving family members pursue justice and focus on healing.
