Hillsborough County, FL (March 10, 2025) – A tragic crash in Hillsborough County on Friday afternoon, March 7, claimed the life of an 81-year-old Ohio woman after the driver of her vehicle failed to stop at a stop sign.
According to the Florida Highway Patrol, the crash happened around 4:30 p.m. at the intersection of Manatee Creek Boulevard and U.S. Highway 41. Authorities say a 78-year-old Ohio man was driving a Chevrolet Equinox westbound on Manatee Creek Boulevard with his wife in the passenger seat. As they approached the intersection, the vehicle collided with a Hyundai Tucson which was traveling northbound on U.S. Highway 41 while being driven by a 25-year-old woman from Ruskin. The incident caused significant damage to both cars. Emergency responders arrived quickly and transported the 81-year-old passenger to an area hospital, where she later succumbed to her injuries. Both drivers sustained injuries described as non-life-threatening. The Florida Highway Patrol continues to investigate the crash.
Our deepest condolences go out to the family and loved ones of the victim during this difficult time.
Intersection Accidents in Florida
Intersections are one of the most dangerous places for drivers, accounting for a significant number of crashes each year. In Florida, more than 30% of all traffic accidents occur at intersections, often due to failure to yield, distracted driving, or running stop signs or red lights. These types of accidents frequently lead to severe injuries or fatalities.
Here are some of the most common factors contributing to intersection crashes:
- Failure to Yield Right-of-Way – Many crashes happen when drivers ignore traffic signs or signals, leading to dangerous right-of-way conflicts.
- Distracted Driving – Using a phone, adjusting the radio, or engaging in other distractions can cause drivers to miss crucial stop signs or red lights.
- High Traffic Volume – Busy intersections with multiple lanes of traffic increase the risk of collisions, especially when drivers misjudge the speed of oncoming vehicles.
- Limited Visibility – Poor lighting, obstructed signs, or parked vehicles can make it difficult for drivers to see stop signs or approaching traffic.
