Pinellas Park, FL (April 1, 2025) – A tragic incident unfolded early Monday morning when a 73-year-old man using a wheelchair was fatally struck while attempting to cross 66th Street North in Pinellas Park.
The Pinellas Park Police Department reported that the collision happened at approximately 6:25 a.m. on March 31. Authorities said the man, later identified as Jeffrey Young, was crossing the road at the intersection of 66th Street North and 78th Avenue North when he was hit by a Nissan pickup truck. Investigators revealed that Young was crossing against the crosswalk signal at the time of the incident.
Emergency crews responded swiftly to the scene and transported Young to a nearby hospital. Despite their efforts, he was later pronounced dead. The driver of the pickup, a 38-year-old man from Pinellas Park, remained at the scene and cooperated with law enforcement. Officials have not indicated whether any charges will be filed as the investigation is ongoing.
We extend our deepest condolences to the family and loved ones of Jeffrey Young during this difficult time.
Pedestrian Accidents in Florida
Florida has consistently ranked among the states with the highest number of pedestrian fatalities. With its mix of dense urban centers, tourist-heavy areas, and wide roadways, the state sees a high volume of pedestrian traffic — and unfortunately, pedestrian-related incidents. According to recent statistics, more than 700 pedestrian deaths occur each year in Florida, with thousands more suffering injuries. Many of these accidents occur during early morning or evening hours when visibility is reduced.
Understanding the risks and effects of pedestrian accidents can help create awareness. Here are some common injuries sustained by pedestrian accident victims:
- Traumatic Brain Injuries (TBIs): When a pedestrian is struck by a vehicle, the impact can easily result in head trauma. TBIs range from mild concussions to severe brain damage, often leading to long-term cognitive issues, memory loss, and personality changes.
- Spinal Cord Injuries: These injuries are especially severe and can lead to partial or complete paralysis. Victims may face long-term rehabilitation, mobility challenges, and dependence on assistive devices.
- Bone Fractures: Broken arms, legs, ribs, and pelvises are common in pedestrian accidents. Recovery time can be extensive, and in some cases, permanent impairment may occur.
- Internal Injuries: Damage to internal organs or internal bleeding may not be visible right away but can be life-threatening without immediate medical attention.
- Emotional and Psychological Trauma: Beyond the physical harm, many victims experience anxiety, PTSD, and depression, especially if the incident involved witnessing a fatality or enduring a long recovery.
