Tampa, FL (March 10, 2025) – A collision involving a bicyclist and a motorized scooter on Dale Mabry Highway left one person dead on Saturday evening, March 8.
According to the Florida Highway Patrol, the incident occurred at approximately 7:38 p.m. in the 11000 block of Dale Mabry Highway. Authorities report that a 41-year-old Tampa woman was operating a motorized scooter in the right turn lane, heading southbound. At the same time, a 72-year-old bicyclist was also traveling southbound along the lane marker separating the right turn lane from the outside travel lane.
As the bicyclist attempted to merge into the outside travel lane, the two collided just north of Hudson Lane. Emergency crews arrived at the scene, but the bicyclist was pronounced dead on-site due to the severity of the crash. The scooter operator sustained injuries that were described as non-life-threatening. The Florida Highway Patrol continues to investigate the circumstances surrounding the accident.
We extend our deepest condolences to the family and friends of the bicyclist who lost their life in this accident.
Bicycle Accidents in Florida
Florida consistently ranks among the most dangerous states for bicyclists, with a high number of fatal and injury-related crashes occurring each year. In recent years, the state has reported over 6,000 bicycle crashes annually, with hundreds resulting in fatalities. These accidents often stem from issues such as heavy traffic, distracted driving, and the lack of sufficient bike lanes or safety measures.
When bicycle crashes occur, several key factors can contribute to the severity of injuries, including:
- Roadway Design & Bike Lanes – Many roads in Florida lack dedicated bike lanes, forcing bicyclists to share space with motor vehicles. Without proper infrastructure, the risk of collisions increases significantly.
- Visibility Issues – Bicyclists are less visible to motorists, especially in low-light conditions or areas with heavy traffic. Poor street lighting and a lack of reflective gear can further contribute to accidents.
- Right-of-Way Confusion – Many crashes occur when vehicles and bicyclists fail to properly yield to each other, particularly at intersections and lane merges. Misinterpretation of traffic laws can lead to serious collisions.
- Distracted or Impaired Driving – Drivers using mobile devices, adjusting their radios, or driving under the influence are major contributors to bicycle crashes. Even a momentary distraction can lead to devastating consequences.
