Tampa, FL – DUI Crash on W Busch Blvd Kills One, Driver Charged

Tampa, FL (May 25, 2025) – A 25-year-old man is facing multiple felony charges following a deadly DUI crash that occurred early Saturday morning in Tampa. The crash, which took place on May 24, involved a black Dodge Ram pick-up truck and a green Lexus RX300 at the intersection of West Busch Boulevard and North Armenia Avenue.

Tampa police say Jefry Hernandez was driving eastbound on West Busch Boulevard when he sped up to “beat the light” as it changed from yellow to red. His vehicle slammed into the Lexus, fatally injuring the driver—a man in his early 60s. Emergency responders rushed the victim to a nearby hospital, where he later died from his injuries.

Hernandez was taken into custody at the scene after officers noted “obvious signs of impairment.” He has been charged with DUI manslaughter, vehicular homicide, and driving without a valid license causing death. He is currently being held at the Orient Road Jail. Investigators also reported damage to nearby power lines, which required additional emergency repairs. The crash is being investigated at this time.

We extend our deepest condolences to the victim’s loved ones during this incredibly difficult time.

Car Accidents in Florida

Tampa, FL - DUI Crash on W Busch Blvd Kills One, Driver ChargedThe Florida Highway Patrol confirms that Florida ranks among the states with the highest number of DUI-related fatalities, recording thousands of alcohol-involved crashes each year. In 2023 alone, Florida documented over 5,000 alcohol-related collisions. These numbers serve as a stark reminder of the dangers posed by impaired driving.

When someone is killed due to another driver’s reckless or impaired behavior, their family may face life-altering consequences. Here are important aspects families should consider:

  • Wrongful Death Claims: In Florida, surviving family members can pursue a wrongful death claim. This legal route allows recovery for funeral expenses, lost income, and loss of companionship.
  • Criminal vs. Civil Cases: DUI-related deaths often lead to both criminal charges and civil lawsuits. While the state prosecutes the offender, families may also pursue damages through a separate civil action.
  • Emotional Grief Support: Losing a loved one in a preventable crash is emotionally crushing. Victim advocates and grief counselors are often available to help families cope with their sudden loss.
  • Insurance Complications: Insurance companies may attempt to minimize payouts even in clear cases of fault. Legal guidance is essential to ensure victims’ families receive full compensation.
  • Court Proceedings and Victim Rights: Families have a right to participate in the legal process, provide victim impact statements, and stay informed throughout the case.
