Car Accidents in Florida
In Florida, hit-and-run crashes are an increasing concern. In 2023 alone, over 104,000 hit-and-run accidents occurred across the state. These incidents often leave victims facing physical injuries, property damage, and unanswered questions about accountability. Law enforcement agencies continue to urge all drivers to stay at the scene and assist others when involved in any type of collision.
When you’re involved in a hit-and-run, here are some key issues to keep in mind:
- Uninsured Motorist Coverage: If the at-fault driver can’t be located, your own insurance policy may come into play. Uninsured motorist (UM) coverage can help pay for medical bills, lost wages, and other costs when the responsible party is unknown.
- The Importance of Witnesses: Statements from witnesses can be crucial in a hit-and-run case. Witnesses may be able to provide details about the fleeing vehicle or even a license plate number. Always ask bystanders if they saw anything and collect their contact info.
- Surveillance and Dashcam Footage: Nearby traffic or business cameras could have captured the crash or the vehicle fleeing. Dashcam footage from your own or other drivers’ vehicles can also support your claim and help police in locating the suspect.
- Police Report and Investigation: Reporting a hit-and-run immediately increases the chance the fleeing driver will be found. A formal police report is also vital for insurance purposes and any legal action you might pursue.
- Getting Legal Help Quickly: Hit-and-run cases can be complicated. An attorney can help guide you through the insurance claims process, gather evidence, and help recover damages even when the other driver is unknown.
