Bicycle Accidents in Florida

Bradenton, FL – Woman & Child Struck by Vehicle on SR 70Bicycle accidents in Florida are a serious issue, with statistics showing that in 2022 alone, there were 7,132 crashes involving bicycles across the state. Although bicycles make up about 2% of all crashes in Florida, the consequences can be severe. It is important to understand the common causes behind these accidents so they can be addressed effectively.

One of the main reasons for bicycle crashes is driver negligence. This happens when drivers are not paying enough attention to the road or the cyclists around them. Common forms of negligence include distracted driving, such as using a phone or other devices while driving, failing to yield the right of way to cyclists, speeding, and driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol. In many cases, drivers simply are not aware of cyclists sharing the road, which increases the risk of an accident.

Additionally, poor road conditions like potholes, debris, and bad lighting can make riding a bicycle more dangerous. The lack of bike lanes in some areas forces cyclists to ride alongside larger vehicles, which increases the chance of collisions. Sometimes, cyclists also make mistakes, such as not signaling when turning or riding against traffic, which can contribute to crashes. Together, these factors lead to many accidents, injuries, and fatalities among cyclists, showing the need for better education, improved infrastructure, and stronger enforcement of traffic laws.
