Plant City, FL – Ambulance Patient Killed in Crash w/ Tractor-Trailer on SR 39

Plant City, FL (February 9, 2024) – A woman being transported in an ambulance lost her life following a crash involving a tractor-trailer on State Road 39 on February 7, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

The crash happened at the intersection of SR-39 and McGee Road when a Hillsborough County Fire Rescue ambulance, operating in non-emergency mode, reportedly failed to yield. A Peterbilt tractor-trailer, driven by a 52-year-old man from Wesley Chapel, collided with the ambulance, causing it to overturn onto its side. The force of the impact also led the tractor-trailer to jackknife.

The patient inside the ambulance, a 64-year-old woman from Plant City, was rushed to a nearby hospital, where she later died. The ambulance driver, a 26-year-old firefighter, and a 47-year-old crew member sustained injuries and were also transported for medical treatment. Their injuries were reported as non-life-threatening. Authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the crash.

We extend our heartfelt sympathies to the family of the deceased individual.

Truck Accidents in Florida

Plant City, FL – Ambulance Patient Killed in Crash with Tractor-TrailerFlorida’s highways are among the busiest in the nation, with large trucks and commercial vehicles traveling daily across the state. Unfortunately, truck-related accidents can result in severe injuries and fatalities due to the size and weight of these vehicles. According to data from the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles (FLHSMV), thousands of crashes involving large trucks occur each year, many leading to serious outcomes.

Several factors contribute to these types of accidents, including:

  • Failure to Yield – Right-of-way violations at intersections are a leading cause of collisions between trucks and other vehicles.
  • Driver Fatigue – Truck drivers often work long hours, increasing the risk of drowsy driving and slower reaction times.
  • Vehicle Instability – Trucks carrying heavy or uneven loads are more prone to jackknifing or overturning in a crash.
  • Limited Visibility – Large blind spots make it difficult for truck drivers to see smaller vehicles or emergency responders at intersections.
