Port Richey, FL (May 25, 2025) – Emergency crews in Port Richey responded to a serious animal bite incident earlier this week that left a child with critical injuries. The incident occurred on May 22 in the 10000 block of Old Hickory Lane.
Pasco County Fire Rescue reported that one minor suffered significant injuries during the encounter and was transported by air ambulance to a pediatric trauma center under a Trauma Alert designation. Another individual, whose age has not been confirmed, sustained minor injuries in the same incident and was treated at the scene. Officials have not released the type of animal involved or the events leading up to the bite. As of now, the circumstances remain under investigation.
We send our thoughts to the young victim and their family and hope for a full and fast recovery.
Animal Attacks in Florida

- Medical Care for Pediatric Injuries: Children are more vulnerable in animal attacks due to their smaller size. Bites can lead to serious infections, facial trauma, or long-lasting physical effects. Treatment often requires emergency surgery and follow-up visits with specialists.
- Psychological Trauma: Beyond physical injuries, many victims—particularly young children—may experience anxiety, nightmares, or post-traumatic stress following an attack. Therapy or counseling may be necessary for emotional recovery.
- Animal Ownership and Responsibility: Florida law holds pet owners accountable for bites caused by their animals. Whether the incident occurs on public or private property, the owner may be liable for damages if negligence or lack of control is involved.
- Rabies and Infection Risk: Any bite poses a risk for serious infection or diseases like rabies. Victims may need post-exposure prophylaxis treatments immediately following a bite, depending on the animal involved.
- Liability Investigations: Determining who is responsible for the animal and whether the incident could have been prevented is crucial. Authorities often investigate prior complaints or history involving the animal in question.
