St. Petersburg, FL – Teen Motorcyclist Killed in Crash on Park St

St. Petersburg, FL (June 16, 2025) – A collision claimed the life of a 19-year-old motorcyclist on June 14 in St. Petersburg. Authorities say the crash occurred around Park Street North and 28th Avenue North when a Mazda SUV turned directly into the path of a northbound Kawasaki motorcycle.

The rider, Mason Derks, was heading north on Park Street North when the westbound SUV on 28th Avenue North turned south onto Park Street North, cutting into his lane. The impact sent Derks off his bike, and emergency responders rushed him to Orlando Health Bayfront. Despite medical efforts, Derks was pronounced dead at the hospital.

The SUV driver remained at the scene and is fully cooperating with the ongoing investigation led by the St. Petersburg Police Department and the Florida Highway Patrol.

We extend our heartfelt sympathies to the family of the deceased individual.

Car Accidents in Florida

St. Petersburg, FL - Teen Motorcyclist Killed in Crash on Park StIn Florida, car and motorcycle accidents are unfortunately common, particularly in areas with heavy traffic and frequent intersections. The state reported over 394,000 crashes in 2023, with nearly 3,500 fatalities. Many of these involve young drivers or result from misjudgments at intersections, highlighting the dangers of turning across traffic lanes.

Accidents involving motorcycles often result in severe injuries or fatalities due to the lack of physical protection for riders. Here are some common motorcycle accident injuries and their impacts:

  • Traumatic Brain Injuries (TBIs): Even with helmets, motorcyclists are at risk for head injuries. TBIs can result in lasting cognitive, emotional, and physical impairments that require long-term treatment and therapy.
  • Spinal Cord Injuries: Damage to the spine may lead to partial or full paralysis. These injuries often require extensive rehabilitation and can permanently change a victim’s quality of life.
  • Broken Bones: Arms, legs, ribs, and hips are frequently broken during motorcycle accidents. Multiple fractures can limit mobility, delay work return, and cause chronic pain.
  • Road Rash and Burns: When skin comes into contact with asphalt at high speed, it can lead to painful abrasions that often need skin grafts and leave lasting scars.
  • Internal Injuries: Blunt force trauma from the crash can damage organs and lead to internal bleeding, which is often not immediately visible but life-threatening without rapid medical care.
  • Psychological Trauma: Motorcycle crash survivors may suffer from PTSD, anxiety, or depression following a serious collision, especially if it involved a fatality.
