Sumter Co, FL – Motorcyclist Killed in SR-471 Crash at State Rd 50

Sumter Co., FL (July 9, 2024) – A fatal motorcycle accident reported in Sumter County claimed one person’s life. The Florida Highway Patrol was informed of the accident at around 9:00 a.m. on July 7.
Reports from the Florida Highway Patrol indicate that a Ford Expedition was traveling west on State Road 50. As the vehicle proceeded through the intersection of Florida State Route 471, the driver reportedly ran a red light. As a result, the vehicle collided with a Kenworth tractor-trailer. The impact of the crash sent both of the vehicles southbound on Florida State Route 471. The tractor-trailer then struck the Harley-Davidson motorcycle.
The motorcyclist, who was later identified as a 70-year-old man from Lakeland, was fatally injured. He was pronounced deceased at the scene. A 69-year-old man from Winter Garden was airlifted to a local hospital for the treatment of serious injuries. A 58-year-old man from Northport was treated for injuries at the scene. At this time, the incident is being investigated.
